“Immigration
101” Provides Resources for Faculty & Academic Advisors of International
Students
Faculty and academic advisors interact on a regular basis with international
students at UNC Charlotte and may at times be caught off-guard by the various
learning styles and sets of expectations based upon non-U.S. educational
systems. In addition, they may not fully realize the enormous pressure felt by
international students due to additional responsibilities such as abiding by
immigration regulations, finding part-time work, and living up to family
expectations in their home countries.
The ISSO offers a workshop
each fall semester, entitled “Immigration 101” which covers some of these
topics, and invites anyone who is interested in learning more to attend.

Change in
North Carolina Drivers License
We are pleased to announce that the North Carolina DMV (Department of Motor
Vehicles) has now changed its regulations to allow F1 and J1 students, scholars
and their dependents to obtain a drivers license without the need for a social
security number or a valid visa!
Documents
necessary to show at the DMV when applying for a drivers license include:
· Valid passport
· Valid I-20 or DS-2019
· Visa (can be expired – Canadians
exempt)
· Proof of residency (either a utility
bill or letter from the Registrar’s Office with your address on it)
· Proof of car insurance
If you have
shown all of the above documents and if you are refused a drivers license,
please let us know the name of the officer you spoke with and the location of
the office. Compliance to these new regulations is important and should be
consistent among all offices.
