    Employment Seminars
The ISSO conducts information seminars each semester on employment. Students are asked to attend these scheduled events if they plan to be employed or participate in Practical Training (F1) or Academic Training (J1).

    Social Security Number
Students on F1 or J1 visas who will be employed are eligible for a social security number and must apply in person at the local Social Security Office at least 10 days after their SEVIS registration, performed by the ISSO.  As of October 13, 2004, all F-1 students who apply for a Social Security Number on the basis of on-campus employment will have to present a letter from the ISSO stating that the student is authorized to engage in on-campus employment, the nature of the employment to be engaged in, and identifying the employer for whom the student will be working.  The F-1 student will also have to provide a statement from his or her on-campus employer, to prove that the student is engaging in, or has secured employment.  This rule does not apply to F-1 students who have an Employment Authorization Document or Curricular Practical Training.
Proof of visa status is required and will include passport, I-94 card, I-20 or DS-2019, a letter of eligibility from the ISSO and a letter from the employing department (if on campus). For off-campus work, you will need to show page 3 of your I-20 for CPT or your EAD for OPT/economic hardship.

Applications and directions to the Social Security Office are available by clicking on the links or in the ISSO.

    Filing taxes - F1 & J1 Students
All international students (F-1 & J-1) who resided in the US during last calendar year are required to complete federal tax forms.

If you have been employed in last calendar year, you will need to file the federal tax forms and the state tax forms.  (see dates/times below) where you will receive tax-filing information, and for a small fee of $3.25 we will issue you a password so that you can access the CINTAX tax software program that will help you to complete your federal tax forms.  We will also provide you with information for filing the North Carolina State tax on form D-400.

Please take to the workshop any tax forms (W-2 and/or 1042-S) that you have received from any and all employers. You should receive these sometime in February.  If, by the end of the month you still have not received them, you should contact your employer(s) – past and present.  (For UNC Charlotte employment that is the Payroll Office on the 3rd floor of the Reese building.)

The ISSO holds several workshops each spring.

Tax workshops for Spring 2009 will be:

    ·          Mon. Feb. 23rd @ 4pm in CHHS 155 (passwords not available before this date)

    OR

    ·          Fri. Feb. 27nd @ 4pm in CHHS 281

For students who only need a password and do not wish to stay for the workshop, passwords can be purchased at the beginning of each workshop or in the ISSO.

If you received a form 1098-T, please disregard unless you have been in F1 or J1 status for 5 years or more and have been employed.  Otherwise, you are not eligible to claim this benefit as part of your tax return.

If you have NOT been employed in the US in last calendar year, you must still file the form 8843.
