    Social Security Number
Students on F1 or J1 visas who will be employed are eligible for a social security number and must apply in person at the local Social Security Office at least 10 days after their SEVIS registration, performed by the ISSO.  As of October 13, 2004, all F-1 students who apply for a Social Security Number on the basis of on-campus employment will have to present a letter from the ISSO stating that the student is authorized to engage in on-campus employment, the nature of the employment to be engaged in, and identifying the employer for whom the student will be working.  The F-1 student will also have to provide a statement from his or her on-campus employer, to prove that the student is engaging in, or has secured employment.  This new evidence rule does not apply to F-1 students who have an Employment Authorization Document or Curricular Practical Training.
Proof of visa status is required and will include passport, I-94 card, I-20 or DS-2019, a letter of eligibility from the ISSO and a letter from the employing department (if on campus). For off-campus work, you will need to show page 3 of your I-20 for CPT or your EAD for OPT/economic hardship.

Applications and directions to the Social Security Office are available in the ISSO.

    UNC Charlotte Student Identification Number
The UNC Charlotte student numbers (800-xx-xxxx) are issued to students who do not have a social security number.  They are used on campus for record and identification purposes but cannot be used when a social security number is required for work or getting a driver’s license.

    Taxes

  • Social Security & Medicare — Students with F1 or J1 visas are exempt from withholding Social Security and Medicare taxes if they have been in the U.S. in that status for 5 years or less.  See the ISSO fore more information.
  • Income tax-all students who work are required to file federal and state income tax forms.  Tax seminars to assist students are conducted by the ISSO each spring prior to the tax-filing deadline.
  • Property Tax – anyone residing in Charlotte or Mecklenburg County and owning property (car, house, etc.) is required to pay annual property tax. Students are responsible for registering cars and other major property and paying assessed taxes.
  • Filing 2007 taxes - F1 & J1 Students
All international students (F-1 & J-1) who resided in the US during 2007 are required to complete federal tax forms.

If you have been employed in 2007, you will need to file the federal tax forms and the state tax forms.  There will be 2 opportunities to attend a workshop (see dates/times below) where you will receive tax-filing information, and for a fee of $3.25 (exact change appreciated) we will issue you a password so that you can access the CINTAX tax software program that will help you to complete your federal tax forms.  We will also provide you with information for filing the North Carolina State tax on form D-400.

Please take to the workshop any tax forms (W-2 and/or 1042-S) that you have received from any and all employers. You should receive these sometime in February.  If, by the end of the month you still have not received them, you should contact your employer(s) – past and present.  (For UNC Charlotte employment that is the Payroll Office on the 3rd floor of the Reese building.)

    Tax workshops will be:

    ·         Fri. Feb. 15th @ 4pm in CHHS 281 (passwords not available before this date)
