International Friendship
& Culture Exchange Program
| The
International Friendship & Culture Exchange Program is an opportunity for American
and International students to spend an hour together each week in
interesting one-on-one conversation; sharing the ideas, customs and concerns
of their respective countries. |
 |
You and
your partner will decide when you will meet and what you will talk about!
You will be matched with someone who shares similar interests and notified by
email with details of your first meeting.
You will be provided with a list of great cross cultural conversation starters.
Goals of the Program
-
To
encourage open communication between international and U.S. American students
-
To
improve awareness and understanding of different cultures.
-
To
provide international students at UNC Charlotte the opportunity to improve
their speaking skills and expose them to American culture.
What did you enjoy most about
the program?
-
“Getting to learn about a different culture, it’s one thing to
read about something, but when you actually talk to and form friendship
w/someone from that culture, you get more information.”
-
“I like the fact that I get to learn about another person and
their culture, up close and personal, without leaving campus!”
-
“Actually, I though it was going to be harder speaking English
with someone who is learning the language, but it really wasn’t.”

The
Cultural Ambassadors program provides international students with an opportunity
to educate UNC Charlotte students, faculty and staff about their culture and
experience as international students in the US.
Typical
Presentations
Typical
presentations are in a panel discussion format and may take place in a classroom
or at a staff meeting. A member of the ISSO staff will facilitate and panels
may consist of 3-6 international students. Questions will be prepared and
students will answer questions based on their own experiences and perspectives.
At the end of the presentation, members of the audience may ask additional
questions. To prepare for the presentation, several days before the event,
panelists usually meet with the discussion facilitator and review the questions.

Host Family Program
(An international friendship experience)
The Charlotte community offers this opportunity for international students to
develop a friendship with an American family. It is an opportunity for
people from different cultures to share some common experiences and learn more
about each other. It is not a live-in situation. This program is intended
for first year students.
Applications are available in the ISSO.
